I was watching “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” on the Food Network and heard this tale of a Chicago Italian Beef & Sausage Sandwich. I was inspired to try it for ourselves. Well I had leftover shredded beef in the refrigerator, leftover bell peppers and hoagie rolls. All I had to get was the sausage, and since I’m in the German area of Indiana what better to use then a Bratwurst. This sandwich is a man killer, it was so awesome.
Ingredients: Serve 2 people
- 2 Bratwurst Sausages
- 2 Tb butter
- 1 1/2 cups (approximately) shredded beef, or beef carnitas (see my recipe)
- 1 can of RoTel diced tomatoes, drained
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
- 1/2 of each, green bell pepper, red bell pepper and yellow bell pepper, all thinly sliced
- 2 Hoagie rolls, nice and sturdy (I used a garlic and herb mini loaf)
- 4 slices Provolone Cheese
In a medium skillet melt the butter over medium heat, add the Bratwurst and saute until they have browned and cooked thoroughly. Remove the Bratwurst and set aside, gently wipe out the excess oil, but not all of it. Add the bell peppers, onion and garlic and saute over medium heat until they have caramelized. In another medium skillet add the shredded beef and RoTel tomatoes, heat thoroughly. Remove some of the bread from the center of your hoagie rolls, this makes room for all of the ingredients. Cut each Bratwurst into slices and add to the top of the hoagie roll. Then add half of the caramelized peppers and onions to that. On the bottom portion of the roll add the beef mixture and both slices of the Provolone Cheese. Place on a foil lined baking sheet and broil on low until the cheese is melted. Put the Hoagie together and serve. YUMMY!
